about
I’ve always had the urge to use the handpan in unconventional ways. The instrument is so delicate, and so naturally, there’s just a part of my brain that is always asking, “how hard can I hit it?” or “what will it sound like if I hit it with this [random object on my desk]?”
Making “Retune” turned this destructive impulse dial up to eleven.
In the process of trying to pull every possible sound of my instrument, I actually had the urge to hit it with a hammer. But I’m not metal enough to do that, and I’m also just not a fan of destroying beautiful instruments. So instead, I reached out to the maker (Meridian Handpans) and asked him to record himself in the process of building a pan, which actually sounds similar to destroying a pan.
The result is a beautiful, crazy melting pot of destruction and creation.
